month of movement: week 2

Eesh, I'm a little behind on posting this. Last week was a bit hectic with some personal matters (both happy and not so happy), but I'm back at work after a long weekend and feeling good and ready to post! Overall, week two was pretty great. I'm a little tired, a little sore in random places but mostly I'm feeling energized and excited. My "new" activity of the week was bootcamp. I believe that I'd done one a couple of years ago at Boston Sports Club, but it's been so long that I thought it was safe to call it new. The good thing about making up your own challenge is that you also get to make up the rules, ok? So here we go:

friday, february 8
activity: bootcamp

I found out about a free bootcamp that was being offered at the Cambridge YMCA and figured it would be a fun activity for me and the roomie to try. Oh, and then I realized that it started at 5:40am and a huge part of my soul died. My office was closed on Friday due to the impending doom that would be Nemo, but things were pretty calm and quiet when we left the apartment at 5:20am. There were only five of us in the class but it was definitely a well-rounded workout. It was so early in the morning that I think I was mostly on auto-pilot, but I definitely walked out feeling sore and sweaty. It's pretty insane to be done with your workout for the day way before 7:00am.

activity: shovel-palooza

And then the blizzard happened. I was briefly worried that I would have to resort to a boring exercise DVD but then realized that nature is my gym, yo. Ok, so that was really corny, but it's true. It took me about an hour to dig out my own car and I spent another helping my neighbor dig out her driveway. Not only is shoveling an excellent and exhausting workout, it's also a great way to meet your neighbors. It was pretty great to see people helping each other dig out their cars, driveways and sidewalks. And I was rewarded for my good deed with lemon bars from my neighbor. I should make a sign that says WILL SHOVEL FOR BAKED GOODS, because you know what? It's totally true.

Nothing particularly interesting happened except that I finally completed the v2 bouldering route that I'd been working on and was just an all around bad ass climber chick. Ya know, business as usual.

monday, february 11
activity: hot yoga
calories burned: 350

Blah blah blah, you've read it a million times before, me and yoga don't mesh very well. Though, I have to say I came pretty close to enjoying the class I took at Prana with Lu. And you should know that "almost enjoying" is pretty much as close to loving yoga as I'm going to get. Also, Lu really loves yoga, and I really love her, so it was good to share that with her.

Tuesday morning workout day with Lauren. I was all ready to do dreadmill intervals and then I slipped on some black ice and hit my knee while walking to the gym. I was on the treadmill for a whole 3 minutes before my knee started screaming and I retreated to the elliptical. Hey, at least I got the workout done, right? RIGHT!

wednesday, february 13
activity: rock climbing

More rock climbing. Again, I don't remember if anything out of the ordinary happened, but there were a ton of people from the meetup group there and I think I had more fun chatting than climbing - as evidenced by the amount of calories I burned.

thursday, february 14
activity: kickboxing
calories burned: 475

Kickboxing, burgers and a "Mortified" show. Pretty much the perfect way to spend Valentine's day. The kickboxing class was TOUGH, but then again, it's always difficult so I shouldn't really be surprised. I don't have much in the ways of core strength, so the portion where your partner pushes your legs down and then you have to lift them up for two minutes straight just about killed me. My abs hurt so good the next day.
