gotta love poppy

My poppy is hilarious, lovable and totally crazy. I'm not even sure how old he is.. 80? 85? But mark my words, he'll outlast us all. He always worked as a valet, so my childhood memories of him often include huge wads of dollar bills. I would feel like the richest kid on the block when he would peel five of them off the roll and hand them to me He also steals magazines from places like barber shops and then brings them to my parent's house. My dad is always telling him that they don't need any issues of Cooking Light or Essence.

Back in college my mom did me a lovely favor and programmed my cell number into his phone. He would call at ungodly hours (aka before noon on a Saturday) to tell me that I was wasting my life and that I needed to get outside and do something useful like mow the lawn. What lawn? I've never had to mow a lawn in my life.

One of my favorite poppy moment has to be during one of those early morning weekend calls. The conversation went something like this:

Poppy: Were you sleeping?
Me: No Poppy, just resting with my eyes closed
Poppy: It's late, you know. You're wasting your Saturday
Me: I know, that's sort of the point of Saturdays when you're in college
Poppy: Oh.. I see. Well, I'm just calling to see if you saw the basketball game last night.
Me: I'm not rally a basketball fan.. who was playing?
Poppy: Boston University.. They played the Knicks.
Me: Are you sure it wasn't the Celtics? College teams don't play NBA teams
Poppy: YES I'm SURE. It was BU. They make NBA teams play colleges when they're awful

this whole, "Are you sure? Yes I'm sure" conversation went on for about five more minutes before I realized that there was only one way for me to get off the phone before my brain melted into my cell phone..

Me: So, who won?
Poppy: Boston University! You know that the Knicks SUCK!

And there you go folks. Just a little more insight as to the crazy family that spawned yours truly.
